Traditional Sport of Kites

Kites or commonly called kites are made of thin sheets of paper, with a framework that is flown into the air and connected by rope or thread to the ground or controller. Kites utilize the power of wind gusts as a lifting tool and are widely known throughout the world as a game tool.

Apart from being a game that is often played by children and adults, kites are also known to have ritual functions, namely as fishing or trapping aids, scientific research aids, and alternative energy media. There are various types of kite games. In Sunda, kites are known as playing langlayangan. Although the most common are decorative kites if in Betawi they are called koang and fighting kites.

In addition, some kites are given a light and can make a sound because of the gust of wind. Kite fights are usually played by children during the transition period because the strong wind blows at that time will make the kite fly high.

In some areas of the archipelago, kites are also played as part of certain rituals, usually associated with the process of agricultural cultivation. The simplest kites are made of leaves that are framed from bamboo, then tied with rattan fibers. This kind of kite can still be found in Sulawesi. It is suspected that some traditional Balinese kites developed from leaf kites due to their oval shape resembling leaves. Kite game:

  1. Can be completed by hooking thread 1 to the opponent's thread.
  2. Can be contested with the beauty of color and serenity in the air.
