Lebaran Betawi and its History

Since the first, the Betawi people's Eid tradition lasts until the third week of the month of Shawwal. This culture is not only used to strengthen friendships but also to continue the Shawwal fast. That is fasting in the month of Shawwal which is lived for six consecutive days. After two days of celebrating Eid al-Fitr, the Betawi people have always been accustomed to fasting in Shawwal.
Realizing the importance of preserving this culture, the Deputy Chairperson of the Betawi Community Deliberative Body (Bamus) for the 2008-2012 period, namely Amarullah Asbah, familiarly called Bang Uwo, initiated the idea of making Lebaran Betawi. Initially, the idea was formed as a means of friendship between Betawi residents who not only live in Jakarta but also from other areas.
In its development, the activity is not only intended for Betawi residents but is also open to a wide audience. At first, the Betawi Eid activity only lasted one day, but after observing the high interest of the Betawi community towards the needs of the Betawi people, the duration was extended to more than one day. Interestingly, the Betawi Lebaran event also featured a variety of Betawi traditional products and cultural performances. Such as dance art, Betawi orchestra, xylophone kromong, lenong performances, or performances of various Betawi silat styles. No less interesting are the rows of bazaar booths selling a variety of Betawi cuisine, souvenirs, paintings, and other products. The Lebaran Betawi activity takes place every year and was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Apart from being a gathering place between community groups and stakeholders, this activity is an inseparable part of efforts to preserve the noble values of Betawi traditions.
