The following are sayings that live in Betawi society or are commonly expressed by Betawi people.

These proverbs or expressions are adapted from the book Betawi Tempo Doeloe by Abdul Chaer.

1. You sell, I buy.

It means that Betawi people like peace and do not seek enemies. However, they will undoubtedly be served or fought if someone challenges them.

2. Dare to hold, dare to pay.

This means the Betawi people will always be responsible for their actions.

3. I can't carry, I carry.

It means the Betawi people will help even though the request is hefty.

4. Look down once in a while.

Betawi people will always help small people who get into trouble.

5. laksa seller selling laksa.

It means that Betawi people will only do work according to their field.

6. Don't waste your life.

It means that Betawi people are prohibited from doing things that are not useful.

7. Don't mess with people's filters.

This means that Betawi people should not interfere in people's household affairs or other people's personal affairs.

8. Don't dry the kunut.

This means that Betawi people are prohibited from procrastinating on tasks or work that must be done.
