Music Art

A Short History of ‘Tanjidor’ Music

Tanjidor is typical art of the Betawi people. The word Tanjidor comes from the Portuguese, tangedor, which means "music." According to the book, ‘Kongres Kebudayaan Betawi’ (Betawi Cultural Congress), published by the DKI Jakarta Tourism and Culture Office (2011), this art was started in the 19th century, initiated by Augustijn Michiels or better known as Mayor Jantje in the Citrap or Citeureup area. The musical instruments used are usually the same as drumben (drum band). The presence of Tanjidor music is intended to entertain, but sometimes it can also be an event to enliven proposals in the Betawi family.

Tanjidor art is commonly used in traditional street music or Cap Go Meh parties among the Betawi Chinese. This music is a remnant of the line music and wind music of the Dutch era in Indonesia. In addition to enlivening the application procession, Tanjidor also enlivened the parade or carnival events at special moments.
