The Tradition of Cleaning the Grave

The tradition of cleaning the grave cannot be separated from other traditions that accompany it, namely the tradition of visiting the grave. Cleaning the grave or also known as 'ngored' is carried out at certain times, for example before the month of Ramadan or during Eid al-Fitr. Not only before the month of Ramadan, but at other times as well such as the month of Zulhijah, Muharam, Rajab, and the month of Shawwal (according to the Hijri calendar).

For the Betawi people, pilgrimage and grave cleaning are seen as one of the socio-religious activities, where people who make pilgrimages then clean the graves from the tall grass or leaves that are scattered around the graves. The purpose of this tradition is not only to clean the graves, but also to pray for the dead, especially from among family members, so that their sins will be forgiven.

In Betawi culture, graves are visited and cleaned not far from their homes. In the mindset of the Betawi people, everyone was created from the ground and will return to the ground. Land is the place of birth and death. For this reason, the Betawi people's house has a large land or garden. Land is to be inherited, not sold. Therefore, in one neighborhood where the Betawi people live, it is sometimes found that there are family graves.
