The Ritual Tradition of Bikin Rume (Building a House)

Betawi community groups have their characteristics, namely helping each other or mutual cooperation. This is applied in the daily activities of the Betawi people in the village. One of the mutual cooperation activities carried out is to build a house from one of the residents or in Betawi language known as Bikin Rume.

In the tradition of Bikin Rume, there are several rituals that must be carried out, especially for the Betawi community in the past. Because ancient people considered building a house a sacred activity. Building a house is sacred because it is related to calculations, some taboos, auspicious days, sustenance and safety for those who occupy the house later. Before building a house, the Betawi people first conduct deliberations among family members.

The topics discussed were varied, ranging from the type of house to be built, about the availability of land, what needs needed to be prepared, requests for assistance with construction costs, to rituals of their ancestral beliefs, such as the direction of the building to be built, auspicious days, etc.

After getting the right day to build a house, then first, a tahlilan is held, or the Betawi people call it 'Merowahan'. Merowahan is a request to God Almighty so that the process of building a house is protected or runs well.
