The Game of Ular Naga

The Game of Ular Naga (the dragon game) is one of the most popular traditional games, especially in Jakarta. This game is played by a group of children of 5 to 10 people. This Ular Naga game is played around afternoon until evening, where the play is in the field or a large yard. The attraction of this game is the dialogue of the children in the game. Therefore, this game really trains children's speaking skills.

The way to play this game is, each child is lined up lengthwise, from front to back. Each player holds the shoulder of the player in front of him. Then there are two children who act as gates. The line would circle around here and there like a dragon walking around. While singing a song, they circled the gate that stood in the middle of the playing field.

At certain times according to the song, the Dragon will walk through the gate. At the last moment, when the song runs out, a child who runs last will be 'captured' by the gate. After that, the "mother" with all members of the line behind her will have a dialogue and argue with the two gate children about the arrested child. Often these arguments are fun and funny, so the children laugh at each other. In the end, the caught child is asked to choose between two options, and based on his choice is placed behind one of the "gates".

The game will restart by singing the song 'Dragon'. The dragon moved again and passed through the gate, and then another child was captured. Then the argument started again. And so on until the mother will run out of children and the game ends. The following are the lyrics of the Ular Naga song sung in the Dragon game:

Ular naga panjangnya bukan kepalang

Menjalar-jalar selalu kian kemari

Umpan yang lezat, itu yang dicari

Kini dianya yang terbelakang

(The dragon snake is absurdly long

Always crawling here and there

Delicious bait, that's what It’s looking for

Now it’s the last one.
