The Game of Ucing – Ucingan

The Ucing-Ucingan game is a traditional Jakarta game, especially from the Ciracas area, East Jakarta. The game depicts the hunt for a dog chasing a cat in a circle with the players holding onto each other's fences. Players mostly consist of 9-year old totaling about 10 children, with 3 children as cat, dog, and commando/referee. This game requires dexterity and strength of the players. Because "the dog" must chase "the cat", then the other players must hold on to each other tightly to make a strong fence.

The game begins by determining who will be the cat, dog, and hand fence. The referee spreads his right palm while another participant places his index finger on it to the accompaniment of the rhyme:

Wer ... wer ... tak.

Ting lipiot tulang bawang

Siapa kejepit masuk lubang

Players must try to pull the index finger so as not to get pinched. If his finger is pinched it means he must be a cat or a dog. If 2-3 index fingers are caught, the lottery starts again until only the index finger is caught.

“The cat” is inside the circle fence while “the dog” is outside. The player who becomes the fence of the circle must spread both hands and hold the middle of the friend's arm beside him so that it does not come off easily. If the referee has said "Yes" then "the dog" starts trying to break through the fence to pounce on the cat. The dog will continue to try to break through the circle by releasing the handrails from the fence.

The player who becomes the fence will squat up - crouch - get up, following the dog's movements. Meanwhile the cat must continue to be alert and ready to dodge. If for some time the dog does not succeed then both will be replaced with another child.
