Betawi Traditional Games

Panjat Pinang Game

The game Coko or Panjat Pinang (Areca climbing game) is a popular traditional game, not only among the Betawi people but also throughout Indonesian society in general. This game is often played during the commemoration of the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia every August 17. The history of the game Coko or Panjat Pinang originated from the Dutch colonial era. At that time a game of Coko or Panjat Pinang was held to enliven the party organized by the Dutch.

Participants who play Coko or Panjat Pinang are indigenous people who work as plantation employees belonging to the Dutch. The prize in the game of Coko or Panjat Pinang at that time was Dutch food such as bread, milk, chocolate, and sugar. Then the gifts were hung on a areca nut tree which had been greased with oil to make it slippery. These gifts were very valuable to the natives at that time. So that the participants compete with each other to get the prizes that are hung.

After Indonesia's independence on August 17, 1945, this game was better known as Panjat Pinang than the name Coko itself. The implementation now is more often carried out to coincide with Independence Day on August 17 every year. Meanwhile, the aim is not only to enliven Independence Day, but also as a means of entertainment to break the daily routine.

The game of Panjat Pinang requires a betel nut tree trunk as high as 8 to 10 meters that has been peeled and then a coconut leaf that is cut in half and formed in a circle to hang the gifts. Unlike during the Dutch colonial era, the gifts that are hung today are no longer Dutch food, but other items, such as cash, flip-flops, mineral water, clothes, snacks, shoes, bicycles and others depending on the funds of the competition committee.

Panjat Pinang can be categorized as youth and adult games which are generally carried out by men aged 15-32 years in the form of groups with members between 6-8 people. The value obtained from this game is to practice cohesiveness, because climbing areca nut can only be done as a team, it is impossible to do it alone. This means that to achieve a goal, you must create a strong team work, which can synergize optimally.
