Nenek Gerondong Game

Nenek Gerondong Game (Granny Gerondong) is one of the popular Betawi traditional games. According to various sources, this game has been known since the Dutch colonial era. This game tells the story of an old grandmother named Granny Gerondong who asks permission to pull sweet potatoes from the tree. However, Granny Gerondong had to pull out the sweet potato with all her might because the sweet potato that was about to be pulled out was very strong and hard.

This game is played by a minimum of 10 people. The game begins with a rock – paper – scissors or hompimpa. The person who loses the hompimpa becomes Granny Gerondong and the rest of the players become sweet potatoes. One of the players who act as sweet potato holds on to a pole, then followed by another player by holding tightly to the first player and continues until the last player. Before Granny Gerondong pulls the players one by one, Granny Gerondong asks for permission first with the following conversation:

Nenek Gerondong: Tok Tok Tok
Ubi: Siapa?
Nenek Gerondong: Nenek Gerondong. Boleh minta ubi?
Ubi: Silakan, ubinya sudah masak
(Granny Gerondong: Knock… knock…
Sweet potato: Who?
Barn Granny: Granny Gerondong. Can I have sweet potatoes?
Sweet potato: Go ahead, the sweet potato is ripe)

After that, Granny Gerondong starts pulling the sweet potatoes one by one. The players who become sweet potatoes must hold on tightly to other players so that they cannot be pulled out or pulled by Granny Gerondong. The player who is successfully pulled by Granny Gerondong must help Granny Gerondong pull other players until the player or sweet potato is completely pulled by Granny Gerondong. After all the players who played the role of sweet potatoes are released, they will run and hide from Granny Gerondong. The first person that Granny Gerondong finds will be Granny Gerondong in the next game.

The value that can be learned from this game is to teach respect to elders. This game can also help children to cope with stress due to learning or other problems by running, laughing and singing. In addition, the benefits for children are increasing intimacy with friends of their age, training muscles in pulling sweet potatoes (when attracting friends), practicing communication, and practicing patience.
