Hikayat Syekh Muhammad Saman: The Founder of the Samaniyah Order

The Hikayat of Sheikh Muhammad Saman is one of the manuscripts copied by Muhammad Bakir. Muhammad Bakir copied it on February 1, 1884 in Pecenongan, Langgar Tinggi. The Hikayat of Syekh Muhammad Saman manuscript was copied by Muhammad Bakir in Malay from Arabic with Arabic-Jawi letters, on European type paper measuring 30 × 18 cm. The manuscript is 57 pages long. The original page numbering was written in Arabic numerals 1-57 in pencil, only every two pages. Each page contains 13-16 lines.

In his explanation at the end of the manuscript, Muhammad Bakir explained, he translated the Hikayat Sheikh Muhammad Saman manuscript from Arabic to Malay so that it could be read and known by people who did not understand Arabic well at that time.

On page 51 of the Hikayat Syekh Muhammad Saman manuscript, it is also explained that this hikayat was successfully translated from Arabic to Malay by Muhammad Muhyiddin, the son of Sheikh Syahbuddin Al-Jawi in 1196 Hijriah or 1782 AD.

The Hikayat of Sheikh Muhammad Saman contains the life history of the famous Sufi figure who founded the Samaniyah Order. The hikayat begins with a story about a number of Allah's guardians, ranging from Sheikh Abdul Kadir Jaelani, Muhyidin ibn Arabi, Sheikh Abi Yazid al-Bustami, Sayyid Umar ibn al-Farid, and Sheikh Muhammad as-Saman.

It is said that the saints of Allah took the knowledge of the Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam. Furthermore, the biography, glory, and karamahs of Sheikh Muhammad Saman are described. When he was about to die, he said the words "Allah, Allah".

Sheikh Muhammad Saman was born and died in the city of Medina, the city where he founded his tarekat. He was born in 1132 Hijri and died on 2 Zulhijah 1189 Hijri, at the age of 57 years.
