Hikayat Panji Kuda Semirang: The Love Story of Candra Kirana and Inu Kertapati

Hikayat Panji Kuda Semirang is a prose which tells the story of the panji in Malay with Arabic-Jawi script. The Hikayat Panji Kuda Semirang consists of two volumes which are stored in the National Library, copied by Betawi’s writer Muhammad Bakir. Copying was completed on June 20 and July 24, 1888, respectively.

The story of Panji Kuda Semirang tells the story of the wandering and romance of Galuh Candra Kirana, the daughter of King Daha, with Raden Inu Kertapati, the son of King Kahuripan. In the first volume, this saga tells the story of Galuh Candra Kirana's life from childhood to becoming a teenage girl. Their kinship relationship is not harmonious between Galuh Candra Kirana and her father Paduka Liku, her stepmother (a concubine), and Galuh Ajeng (Paduka Liku's daughter).

After the death of his biological mother, Galuh Candra Kirana received unfair treatment from his father and stepmother. They always defend and spoil Galuh Ajeng. Finally, Galuh Candra Kirana decided to leave the land of Daha secretly and go wandering.

On the border between the lands of Kahuripan and Daha, she and her companions built a new country. Then she disguised herself as a man and changed her name to Panji Semirang Asmarantaka. Panji Semirang began to seize the property of people who passed through the place and detain the owner to become its people and soldiers. Armed with the booty, Panji Semirang's troops grew stronger. She intended to attack the Mentawan Country.

Feeling unable to fight Panji Semirang, Ratu Mentawan surrendered and submitted to her. Finally, Panji Semirang confronted Raden Inu Kertapati. Raden Inu came to attack to retrieve his stolen property, but he canceled his intention because he saw Panji Semirang's good behavior. They then made friends and Inu Kertapati was invited to stay at Panji Semirang's palace.

After a while, Inu Kertapati felt that there was something wrong with Panji Semirang's behavior. He suspected that Panji Semirang was a woman. His suspicion got stronger when he held Panji Semirang's hand which was smooth like a woman's. At the end of the text, it is told that Inu Kertapati asked Panji Semirang's permission to go to Daha to propose to Galuh Candra Kirana.

Then in the second volume, it tells about the marriage of Raden Inu Kertapati with Galuh Ajeng in the land of Daha. However, this marriage was not happy because Inu Kertapati's mind was always attached to Panji Semirang.

Inu Kertapati who could not stand Galuh Ajeng's behavior finally left Daha to meet Panji Semirang. When he arrived at Panji Semirang's place, he only found Mahadewi who was crying because Panji Semirang left her. From Mahadewi's, Inu Kertapati learned that Panji Semirang was Galuh Candra Kirana, her fiancé. Inu Kertapati decided to wander in search of Galuh Candra Kirana and he changed his name to Panji Jayeng Kusuma. His clerks were ordered to change their names too.

During his journey, Panji Jayeng Kusuma and his clerks conquered several kingdoms and brought some of the king's daughters as tribute. Panji Jayeng Kusuma's journey stopped at the Land of Gageleng. He intended to meet his uncle, King Gageleng, and be greeted with great fanfare by the people of the country. Finally, Panji Jayeng Kusuma decided to stay in Gageleng Country.
