Hikayat Agung Sakti Manuscript: The Incarnation of Semar’s Teeth which Caused Chaos in Heaven

So far, many people do not know about Betawi literature. Betawi literature is stored in manuscripts which are mostly written on a mixture of three types of European paper. These Betawi literary manuscripts were written around the 19th century. The manuscript that will be discussed this time is Hikayat Agung Sakti (The Agung Sakti Saga).

Hikayat Agung Sakti is a prose wayang (Indonesia’s traditional puppet) story. This saga is contained in a single manuscript stored in the National Library with code ML 260. The thickness of this manuscript is 138 pages measuring 31.5 cm x 19 cm.

Hikayat Agung Sakti was written in Malay, Arabic-Jawi letters by a literary author named Muhammad Bakir bin Syafian Usman Fadli who lived in Pecenongan Village, Langgar Tinggi, Pekojan, Tambora, West Jakarta. Hikayat Agung Sakti was written on October 18, 1892. Other sources said that this saga was written on Tuesday night, eleven o'clock on 26 Rabiul Awwal 1310 H.

Hikayat Agung Sakti tells the story of Batara Guru and Narada who were in Suralaya. They were talking about Dewa Agung Sakti who made trouble. Dewa Agung Sakti seduced the nymphs that then caused an epidemic of disease in heaven.

Batara Guru then decided to expel Agung Sakti from the place of the nymphs by asking for help from Sakutaram. This saga tells the story of Agung Sakti, who is the incarnation of Semar's teeth which fell out while he was fast asleep.

When Sakutaram was about to expel Agung Sakti, a fight broke out between the two of them. The power of Agung Sakti cannot be defeated by Sakutaram. However, when he was hit by Sakutaram's arrow, Agung Sakti darted back to his origin and fell into Semar's mouth, and then turned back into Semar's missing teeth. Semar woke up from his sleep and felt surprised because he was in heaven. Semar then felt his gums. It turned out that the missing teeth had returned.

He wanted to be angry with Patih Narada, but Batara Guru calmed him down. Semar then returned home to the Pandawa land. At the end of the story, Sakutaram waited for his enemy who did not appear again. He returned to heaven and returned to his original form as Bagawan Sakutaram.

Currently, the manuscript Hikayat Agung Sakti is stored in the National Library. Some parts of this manuscript have different paper appearances. On pages 1-50, thick brown paper that has been laminated makes the paper stamp difficult to see, while on some sheets you can see the Concordia stamp.

Then, on pages 51-90, the yellowish-white lined paper is stamped with G.KOLFF & C paper and BATAVIA. And lastly for pages 91-138, lined white paper is without a paper stamp. The paper is in good condition because it has been converted by laminating. The script is still legible. The ink used was black, but now dark brown. The text is divided into paragraphs. In this manuscript, an illumination is also found in the form of gunungan pewayangan image.

At the end of the script, the poet wrote a message for the readers. The following is a fragment of the manuscript Hikayat Agung Sakti at the end of the manuscript:

Hamba miskin hina dan papa Sudah bebal bertambah pelupa
I am despicably poor and destitute, I am ignorant and forgetful

Hikayat dikarang mengharap upah Sepuluh sen itu tiada seberapa
The saga was made to get ten cents, it was nothing

Sepuluh sen itu sudah patutnya Dalam sehari semalam itu sewanya
Ten cents is what it deserves. In a day and a night it is the rent

Tiada rugi dengan ceritanya Sebab 10 sen pulangin wang capenya
Nothing to lose with the story because 10 cents worth the fee

Cape menulis pegal mengarang Upahnya sepuluh sen dibilang terang
I am tired of writing. The wages of ten cents are fair I think

Baca hikayat menjadi girang Dapat tahu raja berperang
Reading saga becomes happy. Can know the king when he is at war

Sepuluh sen itu diberinya nyata Wang mengarang ini cerita
The ten cents are what they are, the money for writing this story

Belon wang kertasnya dan tinta Wang minyak lampu pelita
Not to mention the money for paper and ink, the money to buy oil for the lamp

Maka itu jangan takut rugi Sewa hikayat jangan sampai tagih
So don't be afraid of losing money to rent a saga

Bayaran betul boleh dapat lagi Boleh dengar cerita berbagai-bagai
