Betawi Traditional Games

Exercising Balance with Stilts

The game of stilts was known before independence in 1945. Stilts are bamboo or wood that are given a footing (for the feet) so that the feet can move freely on them. Stilts are made simply by utilizing natural potential.

Generally stilts use two bamboo stalks, with a length of more than one meter. A few centimeters from the ground is made a footing. Through that footing the stilts players walk.

The bamboo that is commonly used for this game is a type of bamboo apus or bamboo wulung. There are also other types of bamboo that can be used, for example bamboo petung or larger bamboo ori.

Stilts can be played individually or in groups. In rural areas, stilts are played during the day after school or when grazing livestock. The game of stilts is more often used to relax. Only at certain times the stilts are used for the game of the race. The skill that a stiletto player must have is body balance. Without being able to maintain balance, the player will often fall.

Stilts can be short or tall. Stilts vary in size, depending on the player's height. When people play stilts, their body position is much higher than the real body.

Among the Betawi people, stilts are played during carnival by walking along with the ondel-ondel procession. For example, during the celebration of Indonesian independence, the Betawi people often hold stilts competition.

In the past, stilts were played as a procession when the harvest season arrived, especially in suburban Betawi areas, such as Pondokrangon, Cipayung, Ciledug, Joglo, and other areas where the residents were farmers.
