Congklak: A Game that Sharpens the Quick Thinking and Trains Patience

Congklak developed in Southeast Asia, especially the Malay region. Indonesian people, including the Betawi people, know congklak well even though it has different names in each region.

According to history, congklak first entered and developed in Indonesia by the Arabs who came to trade and preach. Archaeologists and some experts believe that congklak originated in the Middle East and then spread to Africa and Asia.

Congklak is played by 2 people facing each other. This game uses a type of clam shell as congklak seeds, or it can also be replaced with seeds from plants and small stones. Then the congklak boards are made of wood, but some are made of plastic with a length of 40-50 centimeters.

On the congklak board there are 16 holes consisting of 14 small holes facing each other and 2 large holes on both sides. Every 7 small holes on the player's side and the big holes on the right side are considered the property of the player.

The game starts when one of the players picks up the congklak seeds that are in one of the 7 holes in their section. Then the player must distribute it to each hole, including the parent hole.

Other players will have a turn when the previous player has run out of seeds to share. Later the small holes are filled with 5-7 seeds made of shells or sapodilla seeds, while the big holes are left empty, suppose that the big holes are the players' storerooms.

The game ends when all the small holes are empty, and all the seeds are in the big holes. The win is determined by the highest number of seeds that are in the big hole of each player.

This game has its unique philosophy. The trading spirit and sharpness of thinking of someone who often plays congklak will be honed. Congklak games can stimulate numeracy skills. Because, playing congklak is certainly full of strategies, how to win and get lots of seeds.

This simple game of congklak has a strong basic character education value. In addition to sharpening the brain, playing congklak can also teach honesty and obedience to applicable rules. Because, when the player holds a number of seeds in his hand and drops them in each hole, the opponent does not really see the number of seeds being held whether the seeds are actually dropped one by one or not.

This is where honesty is practiced. Because the rules of the game have been mutually agreed upon, so as much as possible the players do not cheat in the game. Playing congklak also trains patience, because players are accustomed to patiently waiting for their turn to play. When the game is over, no one is fighting over who wins and losses.
