Yapong Betawi Dance

Yapong dance is a contemporary dance from Betawi created by renowned Indonesian dancer and choreographer Bagong Kussudiardja in 1977. The dance was dedicated to commemorating the 450th anniversary of Jakarta. The initial performance of the yapong dance was carried out when the capital city of Jakarta was commemorating its 450th anniversary, to be precise. on 20 and 21 June 1977 at the Senayan Convention Center. The idea of ​​the dance performance itself was an initiative of the DKI Culture Office, which was articulated by Bagong Kussudiardja. The dance raises the story of the struggle of Prince Jayakarta as the background for the choreography of the Yapong dance. This dance movement is not made arbitrarily, because it has been through research and observation of the Betawi culture. At the beginning of the performance, there were approximately 300 artists consisting of dancers and musicians involved in the ballet activities.

Despite its contemporary nature, the Yapong dance has become an icon of Betawi art which is often performed in folk celebrations such as welcoming the seventeenth, cultural events in Jakarta to the celebration of the anniversary of the City of Jakarta.

The costumes worn by the Yapong dance dancers are similar to the costumes of the Betawi Mask dance dancers. The difference is that the Yapong dancers wear light-colored clothes and add Betawi fabrics. In addition, a flower crown and sash will be worn by the dancers as a complementary decoration. This sash is called toka-toka which is placed on the chest and is tied with jewelry on the abdomen.

Meanwhile, the accompanying music for the Yapong dance is the tambourine with various types, such as the hadroh tambourine, the rebana biang, and the ketimpring tambourine. Not infrequently the rhythm of gamelan music is also included. Each dancer will dance in groups of about 5-10 dancers. There are many Yapong Dance movements, including:

Megol Lembehan movement: balancers, place their thumbs on the hips. As for female dancers affixed to the chest. In this movement, the dancer's feet will walk in place with the left hand placed on the chest.

Enejer Jump: this movement requires the dancer to bend one hand, and the other hand to be left straight. Then he would jump towards the bent hand.

Singgetan Ngigel Movement: when the hand position is in front of the eyes, the dancer will make a circular motion (ngigel)

Yapong movement: is the last movement. The dancer will place their hands above their heads, and open their palms. His movement was like sweeping the wind from left to right.
