Uncul Dance

Uncul dance is an original Betawi dance that is believed to have emerged in the 18th century in Setu Cipayung which was created by a Betawi man named Yakub. Through his efforts, he has succeeded in combining silat and dance movements which are now being developed by his descendants, namely Nawan and Tohir. In every performance, the Uncul dance which combines dance and martial arts is accompanied by Betawi music, namely Sampyong. Sampyong music consists of a sampyong, a kind of simple xylophone with four blades made of bamboo or wood, plus a bamboo gong, and buffalo horn. Sampyong is presented along with two other instruments, namely the celempung and kotekan.

During the performance, the players or dancers usually also carry a flexible wooden stick made of rattan as big as a big toe with a length of about 80 cm. While holding the rattan, Uncul dancers appear in the arena after first saluting by bowing. Then, he dances with punches, parrying with his rattan beats accompanied by the strains of the original Betawi music, namely Sampyong.

Uncul dance has the function of providing stimulation and challenges that heat the opponent in the final arena. In the past, the Uncul dance was performed after the harvest season. Now, the Uncul dance is rare, even close to extinction. Uncul art is an intangible cultural heritage.
