Traditional Sports of ‘Fencing’

Indonesia is a country with such rich cultural uniqueness and diversity. From Sabang to Merauke, from Miangas to Rote, every corner of Indonesia has a different color and unique culture. One of the cultures owned by Indonesia is ‘Anggar-anggaran’ (fencing), a traditional game originating from Betawi. How to make fencing from banana stems is also not difficult and here are the steps: 1) First clean the banana stems from the leaves using a knife. For children, it is better to ask parents for help; 2) The part of the banana leaf used is only 1 meter. Cut and discard the rest of the stems of the banana midrib that are too long; 3) Slice the banana midrib into as many as two slices. The first slice is about 10-15 cm from the tip of the banana midrib, while the second slice is about 10-15 cm from the first slice; 4) Bend the banana midrib on the slices so that they form a triangle, then tie it with a rope. Fencing is now ready to play. The essence of the game is to hit the opponent's body as much as possible with the fence that we hold and avoid the opponent's fence. Parts of the body that may be attacked may only be from the shoulders to the feet. If the allotted time is up, then the player who hits the opponent's body the most with the fence is declared the winner.
