Toponymy of West Jakarta
The West Jakarta City Culture Sub-Department considers it necessary to publish a West Jakarta Toponymy book to explain the origin of the names of villages/numbers/places/regions in West Jakarta. There are eight sub-districts in West Jakarta, namely Cengkareng, Grogol Petamburan, Tambora, Tamansari, Kebon Jeruk Palmerah, Kembangan, and Kalideres. Meanwhile, there are 56 urban villages in West Jakarta.
But of course, only some of the names of the kelurahan are described by their toponyms because there are many urban villages whose names are the same as one another and are only distinguished by the location of the cardinal points. There are 16 such urban villages in total—for example, North Sukabumi and South Sukabumi, North Meruya and South Meruya, and so on.
In addition, there are eight urban villages with the same name as the sub-districts. Such as Cengkareng (East and West), Grogol, Tambora, Tamansari, Kebon Jeruk, Palmerah, Kembangan and Kalideres. So overall, this book contains the names of 8 sub-districts and 32 urban villages. Making toponymy is also expected to preserve cultural values, history, and customs and realize government administration.
