The Merowahan Tradition, a Custom for the ‘Rume’ of the Betawi People

Betawi people have the Merowahan tradition, which is a traditional procession that must be taken before the construction of a house. In the past, the Betawi people did not carelessly build a house. Merowahan custom is a process carried out by sohibul hajat to ask Allah SWT so that the construction of his house runs smoothly and always gets His protection.

Before Merowahan is held, there is usually an internal family consultation. The topics of discussion are various, such as the type of house to be built, the availability of land, the needs that need to be prepared, funding, and the direction of the building deciding on a good day to start the implementation of the house construction.

After deciding the good day, then a Merowahan procession is held which begins with tahlilan. On that occasion, the owner of the intention also invited neighbors to babaturan or baturan (Betawi language). The goal is to ask for the involvement of neighbors to help in the smooth process of building a house. This neighbor's help is also known as Nyambat or Sambatan.

When Baturan is performed, the Betawi people place five salt bricks, one is placed in the middle, and the other four are placed in each corner of the ground. It is believed that the land is free from spirits or supernatural beings, which could interfere with the house construction process.

Before the teacher's pillars or the main pillars supporting the building were erected, on top of the stone pedestal (the teacher's pedestal) silver coins or gobangan coins were placed (coins as a medium of exchange before cents). It means that the owner of the house lives in peace and always has money.

Next is the installation of rafters at the top of the house. Before being installed, the Betawi custom was to make a salvation event. At this stage, the owner intends to make red porridge and white porridge as a condition which is then wrapped (in Betawi: diplengsong) with banana leaves and placed on top of each teacher's pole. This is a requirement for supernatural beings (upper people) so that they do not interfere and do not inhabit the houses that have been built. When the house was fully built, the owner was not allowed to sleep in it for several days. The goal is that the circulation in the house is formed first and for the safety of the homeowner.
