In one opinion it is said that Tamim Ad-Dari is a narrator of hadith, while in the Hikayat manuscript itself Tamim Ad-Dari was a friend of the Prophet Muhammad. The biography of Tamim Ad-Dari was later written in Persian. Then it was adapted into several other languages such as Sundanese, Bugis, Makassar, Malay, Acehnese, Turkish, Spanish, and Urdu.

In the Hikayat Tamim Ad-Dari, it is told that he had a wife named Khaulah and had four children, two boys, and two girls. When he was bathing in a lake, he was kidnapped by an infidel jinn named Jin Ifrit, who then brought him to the land of the infidel Jinn. His wife felt that she had lost her husband. Then, Tamim Ad-Dari's wife complained to the caliph Umar after waiting for Tamim Ad-Dari for 4 years and never came. Khaulah was unable to bear family life alone without a husband and she even intended to remarry. However, the caliph Umar advised her to wait until her iddah period was over, which was four more days and during that period the life of Khaulah and her four children was borne by the state.

Meanwhile, Tamim Ad-Dari who was brought by Jin Ifrit to the land of the infidel jinn which was in the bowels of the fourth layer of the earth felt sad and isolated. While in the land of the infidel jinn, Tamim Ad-Dari heard the sound of takbir and tahmid. He soon learned that in the land of the jinn a war was going on between the jinn of Islam and the jinn of infidels. The war was over and won by the jinn of Islam. Tamim Ad-Dari was also found by the soldiers of the Islamic jinn and then taken to the land of the Islamic jinn. There Tamim Ad-Dari was asked to teach the children of the king of the jinn of Islam as many as 14 jinn.

After three years of living in the land of the Islamic jinn, Tamim Ad-Dari missed his wife and children very much. He excused himself to the king of the Islamic jinn to be reunited with his children and wife. Tamim Ad-Dari was also escorted by Sahar, one of the jinn of Islam who was able to travel far into the human world. Tamim Ad-Dari was flown to Medina by Sahar.

However, on his way back to Medina, Tamim Ad-Dari faced various obstacles. He also had to explore various lands and worlds filled with other creatures such as demons. At the end of the story, he managed to return to Medina to gather with his children and wife.
