Pantun Betawi: History and Characteristics

Betawi rhymes (pantun) originate from the oral tradition of the Betawi people with lines without a specific arrangement. The contents of Pantun Betawi are expressions of feelings with ethical values ​​and Islamic religious teachings. Betawi pantun is a development of Malay pantun in the 17th and 18th centuries and Gujarati pantun of the 15th century. Betawi rhymes, like throughout Malay society, have standard or non-standard rules. If the poems of the Malay people who have lived so long are very formal, then Betawi's poetry is just the opposite. The hallmark of Betawi poetry is the use of the Betawi language, with the choice of words and sound elements that are fun, spontaneous, and sincere. Pantun Betawi has its uniqueness, which is a more modern pattern.

In addition to the rhyming pattern, AB-AB is also known as the A-A-A pattern. Likewise, for lines, a 4-line pattern is called a rhyme, and a 2-line way is called a carmine. There are even six patterned lines. The Betawi people use Pantun Betawi to express the social condition of their people. In addition, Pantun Betawi is also used to express equal human rights in all respects, including household life and the relationship between in-laws and in-laws. Sampiran in Betawi Pantun serves to equalize the sound and express straightforwardness and feelings at will. Concerning the rhymes' content, many Betawi rhymes, apart from trying to give various advice related to ethics, morals, manners, and religious teachings, also contain a lot of social criticism.

The Betawi people use Pantun Betawi in a wedding tradition called Palang Pintu. The bride uses it to ask about the groom's ability to meet the requirements for marriage. The poem's contents are advice for the bride and groom and their families. The two brides and groom will then exchange rhymes with each other and be followed by verses from each family. Words of humor accompany Betawi Pantun, but it still pays attention to manners.
