Origin of the name Marunda, North Jakarta

Marunda is an administrative area that holds the status of a village and is part of the Cilincing District, North Jakarta. From the origin of the name Marunda until now there are still various versions. The first version, according to Zaenudin HM in his book entitled “212 Origins of Djakarta Tempo Doeloe”, (2012) stated, based on information from community elders, the word Marunda comes from the word humble. This means that the character of the community and residents has a humble nature, avoiding being arrogant or arrogant.

Another version is caused by the contours of the land in the area which are stepped and uneven. People used to call it merundak, and maybe later it was popular as Marunda. The next version is that in the past there were many mango stingray trees in Latin Mangifera laurina or palm kecik in Javanese. Because the Latin term Mangifera laurina is difficult to pronounce in the native tongues, they finally call it Marunda.

There is also a mention that Marunda is an acronym for the Headquarters of the Dutch Troops. The place was considered strategic to lower the army after going through a long journey in the middle of the ocean. In the past, it was believed that Marunda would often be a transit point, to rest, consolidate, and strategize before attacking Jayakarta.

Based on an encyclopedia.jakarta-tourism.go.id, the origin of the name Marunda or Kampung Marunda stems from the message of Sheikh Syarif Hidayatullah when building a mosque. According to the story, the occurrence of the Marunda village started with a mosque which was postponed because the local people could not receive the broadcast of Islam. Following Syarif Hidayatullah's message, to leave the village if there is a conflict due to the broadcast of Islam. When the villagers were aware and needed a place of worship, the construction of the mosque was resumed. The mosque is called the Marunda mosque. Marunda comes from the word delay. The village where the mosque was built was named Marunda village.

Marunda village is bordered by the Java Sea in the north, Cilincing in the west, Bekasi Regency in the east, and Rorotan in the south. In addition to the industrial area (Kawasan Berikat Nusantara), in Marunda there are also various historical sites, such as the house of Si Pitung, and the Al Alam Marunda Mosque.
