Nandak Ganjen Dance

Credit: DKI Jakarta Cultural Department

Entong Sukirman and Atien Kisam created the Nandak Ganjen dance. Nandak means dancing, and Ganjen means flirty.

This dance depicts the atmosphere of growth and association of young Betawi girls, who are agile, coy, flirtatious, lively, and happy but still adhere to the tradition of politeness.

Nandak Ganjen dance contains a message that the life cycle of humans, especially Betawi women, is not flat but full of internal dynamics within themselves and the dynamics in their environment.

Thus, Betawi women are happy about their nature as women.

This dance is taken from the basic movement pattern of a combination of masks and cokek. It can be seen from the musical accompaniment.
