‘Main Karet’ Traditional Sports

This jump rope game is a favorite when “out playing” at school and after an afternoon bath at home. The jump rope game is played together by 3 to 10 children. When and where this game started is difficult to know for sure. However, from the name of the game itself, it can be assumed that this game appeared in the colonial era. Actually, in other areas of Indonesia, many of these games are also found but with different names, for example, the name Yeye, Tali Merdeka (Riau), Lempan, and others.

The equipment used in the jump rope game is very simple, namely rubber bands that are woven or strung together until they reach the required length, usually about 3 to 4 meters.

  • The players do ‘hompipah’ or ‘pingsut’ to determine the two players who are the holders of the rope.
  • The two players who are holding the rope do shuffle to determine who will get a turn to play first if a player fails to jump.
  • The two players who are the holders of the stretcher rope and the player must jump over it one by one the height of the rubber starting from ankle height, then up to the knees, thighs, and waist. In these eight stages, the player must jump without touching the rubber rope. If any player touches the rubber rope while jumping, his turn is over and he must replace the player holding the rope.
  • The position of the rubber strap is raised to the chest, then the chin, ears, crown, and hands are raised with feet on tiptoes. At these height stages, the player may touch the rubber rope while jumping, as long as the player can cross the rope and not get caught. Players are also allowed to use various movements to make jumping easier, as long as they don't use assistive devices.
  • Players who fail to jump over the rubber rope must stop playing and replace the rope holder. If all the altitude responses have been completed by the players, the rubber rope is lowered again and the game starts from the beginning. And so on until the players decide to end this game.
