Cokek Betawi Dance

Cokek dance is a product of Betawi art that is influenced by Peranakan Chinese culture. According to J. Kunst in Husein Wijaya (2000: 79), Cokek dance is a dance that is performed while singing and is considered a cultural art for people of Chinese descent. Almost every aspect of this Cokek dance cannot be separated from the cultural influence of the Chinese community, both in terms of movement, musical accompaniment to costumes. Likewise, the naming of Cokek comes from the Hokkien language, namely 'chniou-khek' which means to sing a song. The peculiarity of this Cokek dance is that the dancers also sing songs accompanied by the rhythm of xylophone kromong music.

The costumes used by the Cokek Dance dancers also cannot be separated from Chinese influence. The clothes of the brackets and the kebaya encim made of silk in various bright colors such as red, yellow, and green as well as purple are the typical clothes of the Cokek Dance. Not to forget, the dancers wear scarves (cukin). For the Chinese people's beliefs, the color red is a symbol of strength, determination, and spirit and is believed to be a bulwark against evil spirits. While the yellow color symbolizes prosperity. While the green color is a symbol of purity or holiness. While the purple color is a symbol of heaven, God, or spirituality.

In the past, songs sung by dancers or wayang Cokek were not only in Indonesian but also in Chinese. In development, singing in Mandarin, Hokkien or Chinese is already rare. While typical Betawi songs that are usually sung by Cokek dancers such as Kramat Karem, Jali-Jali, Kicir-Kicir, Sirih Kuning and Lenggang Kangkung. The difference between Cokek dance and other Betawi dances is that in the middle of the performance, usually, the Cokek dancer (wayang) will invite guests (audience) to dance and sing together. The trick, the Cokek dancer will drape his scarf to a guest and pull him onto the stage. At that time, if there was a celebration, the Cokek performance could be held all night, depending on the number of requests for songs to be performed. This dance developed in the Betawi-Chinese community on the outskirts of Jakarta, such as in the Teluk Naga, Cisadane River, Tangerang, Bekasi, or Depok areas. But on the way, this Cokek show is quite rare.
