Betawi Traditions in the Month of Ramadan

Ramadan is a month awaited by all Muslims around the world. Also in Indonesia. For Muslims, Ramadan is a month that promises God's forgiveness and blessings. There is a diversity of traditions of Muslims in Indonesia that is welcoming the month of Ramadan based on the culture in each region. Well, Friend of Culture, ethnic Betawi have a hereditary tradition to welcome the holy month of Ramadan. Some traditions are already scarce because of modernization, and some are still being preserved. Following are the traditions of the Betawi people to welcome the holy month of Ramadan.

- Nyorog tradition. This tradition was introduced by the guardians who spread Islam in the land of Sunda Kelapa in the 18th century. Nyorog culture is the tradition of sharing food parcels or snacks with relatives or relatives who live far apart. Generally, the contents of this parcel can be in the form of cakes, necessities, and rantang in opposition to buffalo meat. The purpose of this culture is to strengthen the bond between parents and children and as a symbol of respect for those who are older. Not only before Ramadan, but Nyorog is also commonly held during Lebaran and wedding ceremony processions. The Groom’s family will come to the bride's family with sorogan or food parcels;
- Nyekar Tradition. The nyekar culture is a tradition of pilgrimage, praying for parents, family, and relatives who have passed away. This culture is commonly practiced by almost the majority of Muslims before entering Ramadan. The Betawi community is an ethnic group that is known to be religious and also participates in the Nyekar tradition. The goal is to always remember death and always istiqomah to send prayers for the family who has passed away. In addition to praying, pilgrims also come with jasmine flowers, roses, and rose water to be sprinkled on the graveyard;
- Ruwahan Tradition. This culture is usually carried out by the Betawi people at the end of the month of Sha'ban or before Ramadan. The word ruwahan is taken from the word "spirit" or ancestral spirit. Betawi people believe that ancestral spirits will visit their relatives before fasting fully in the month of Ramadan. This tradition is usually carried out by holding recitations, tahlil, and prayers that invite family, and relatives to religious leaders, ending with having a meal together. Betawi specialties are also served, such as ketupat sayur (vegetable rice cakes), stews, pickles, and small cakes. This culture can also be done on the night of takbiran ahead of Eid.
- Merang Tradition. This tradition has been popular since the 1950s. Betawi people will crowd along the riverbanks ahead of the Ramadan fast to wash their hair using coconut shells. Merang is a dried rice stalk that is burned, then soaked. Then, merang is used as a substitute for soap and shampoo. The merang tradition is carried out by various groups and ages, from children to the elderly. Bathing is meant to cleanse oneself and the ‘heart’. Over time, many Betawi people have abandoned this tradition.
