Ajeng Gamelan

Ajeng Gamelan is one of the folkloric music (a type of music that is distinctive, soothing, and lightly accompanied by poetic lyrics) in the Betawi region. Gamelan Ajeng Betawi is influenced by elements of Javanese, Sundanese, Balinese, Chinese and Malay culture.

Based on the book, Betawi Cultural Congress published by the DKI Jakarta Tourism and Culture Office (2011), gamelan music is played together and used to accompany Topeng performances and dances as well as accompanying Betawi songs.

The Gamelan Ajeng musical instrument consists of a kromong ten pencon, a trumpet, a drum (two large and two kulanter drums), two saron, a bende, a cemes, and a kecrek.

That said, this gamelan is considered sacred because it is only played at weddings. The distinctiveness of the Ajeng gamelan is symbolized by two large gongs called gong lanang (male) and gong wadon (female). The two gongs are specific and can only be played in a certain place, namely the pajengan (a two-meter-high stage). This type of gamelan still exists in several places, such as Ciputat, Depok, and Bogor. In this area, it is often called gamelan gong or just a gong.

At first, this gamelan was usually used as accompanying music for ceremonies, but in its development, it is also used to accompany the Belenggo Ajeng dance or the Gong Topeng dance. In addition, it also functions as an accompaniment for wayang kulit or wayang wong Betawi, one of the elements of Javanese art adopted by the Betawi community, especially on the outskirts of Jakarta. Ajeng Gamelan is usually presented to enliven family celebrations such as circumcision, marriage, and many more. Recently, it has been used as an accompaniment for Jaipong by adding a repertoire of Sundanese Pop songs.
