Traditions of the Khataman Al-Qur'an Ceremony

Islam is a religion that is predominantly practiced by the Betawi people. Therefore, there are several Islamic laws that have entered the Betawi cultural tradition. One of them is a special ceremony for children who have finished reading the Qur'an, or commonly called the khataman Qur'an.

The "Khataman Al-Quran" ceremony was held with the intention of showing gratitude and feeling proud and happy, because the children had successfully completed their lesson in reading the book of Juz Amma. Notifications are delivered by the Qur’an teacher to his parents, then forwarded to the community through a ceremony.

With the Khataman Al-Qur'an ceremony, it is hoped that children can change attitudes and traits from children to adults, do good and practice the knowledge they have, become role models in their community. There is no specific time to hold the Khataman Al Qur’an ceremony.

This event can be held two to three times a year, if within a year there are children who manage to finish reading the Qur'an more than once. The time for the ceremony itself is usually held from the afternoon until the evening. This event is usually also interspersed with lectures by an ‘Ulama, for example about the history of the Al Qur’an which was revealed by Allah to the Prophet Muhammad SAW, or sometimes filled with Qasidah.

In addition to being held at the mosque, the completion of the Qur'an can also be held at the child's house. Before the ceremony begins, the participants of the ceremony gather at the home of the teacher of the Qur’an and then together go to the place of the host. Sometimes this ceremony is also held in the madrasa or the taklim assembly room. Thus, it depends on mutual agreement.

The "Khatam Al Quran" ceremony is attended by children, both boys and girls, who has finished reading the Juz Amma book. The age of the participants is approximately 7-10 years. The children who will be given the ceremony are accompanied by their respective parents by wearing traditional clothes, now they usually wear Muslim clothes, for men complete with caps, and women wearing hijab.
