The Tradition of Nyelawat or Ngelawat

When someone dies, the Betawi people will carry out several processions before and after the deceased person is buried. One of the processions carried out by the Betawi people is Ngelawat or Nyelawat. Ngelawat or nyelawat is visiting the house of neighbors, relatives or other people who are being afflicted with misfortune such as death.

This Betawi custom is mainly carried out by neighbors and closest relatives. People who come to visit to nyelawat usually bring donations in the form of money called "uang selawat" whose amount is not determined depending on their ability and sincerity.

This tradition is usually followed by other traditional processions such as helping to take care of the corpse. The management of this corpse starts from bathing to carrying out a ceremony for fidiyah or pudie which is housed in a mosque or prayer room and is led by an elder local kiai. The family of the corpse handed over a representative to the kiai by saying ijab-kabul.

Then after the funeral is over, the tahlilan is held. This event is a tradition as a form of respect for people who have died and is manifested in tahlilan prayers.

This tahlilan is held by family members left behind by the deceased. They hold salvation or alms when the deceased has reached 7 days, 40 days, 100 days, and 1000 days from the time of death. During tahlilan they invite neighbors and relatives to attend and read verses from the Qur'an and prayers for the deceased.
