The Ritual of Fidhiyah or Pidie Sharing

In the Betawi community, if a family member dies, the family left behind must carry out the ritual of paying fidhiyah or pidie. Fidhiyah or pidie is a procession of giving rice or other foodstuffs given by the bereaved family to make up for the shortcomings of a recently deceased family member.

The fidiyah or pidie ceremony is carried out in the mosque or prayer room when the body is being bathed. The distribution of fidhiyah is led by a local kiai or senior religious figure to be distributed to the poor and needy. The family of the corpse handed the pidie rice to the kiai by saying ijab kobul (the consent).

The consent is pronounced like this:
"Saya punya beras 300 mud (1 mud= 0,75 kg) saya jadikan fidiyah puasanya si fulan karena ia meninggalkan puasa 300 hari (kalau salat berarti 300 waktu) serta mudnya, saya wakilkan kepada bapak kiai".

(I have 300 mud of rice (1 mud = 0.75 kg) I make this as fidiyah of him (the one who died) because he left the 300 day fast (if prayer means 300 times) and the mud, I represent it to the Kiai)

Then, kiai accepted the handover. The kiai who becomes the shohibul of the corpse leads the ceremony by first explaining the purpose of the implementation of fidhiyah. It is clearly stated that a certain amount of rice is accepted as payment for the qada of fasting and prayer that the body has left for several days or time while it is still alive. The position of the congregation in the mosque is facing each other and later each position will be a guardian and witness. Rice is placed in the middle of the congregation.

After receiving rice from the bereaved family, the kiai also uttered words as proof of receiving the given fidyah rice. The words are like this:
"Beras ini ada 300 mud saya jadikan fidhiyah qada puasanya si fulan selama 300 hari, saya terima sebagai di sebelah 'beletan ngadep ke bekulon'.

(This rice has 300 muds, I make fidhiyah qada for his fasting for 300 days, I accept it as next to 'beletan ngadep kekukulon’)

Then the congregation answered him with the following words:

"Saya terima wakilnya dan saya wakilkan kembali"

(I accept the representative and I represent again)

After the fidhiya or pidie procession is carried out, then continue with the tahlil reading by the congregation led by the kiai.
