Betawi Traditional Games

The Game of Torti

The traditional game of Torti is almost the same as other traditional Betawi games, namely hide and seek or tap inglo. It's just that the Torti game is played in teams or in groups, one group is on guard and the other is a group that walks or hides. The name torti comes from the sound of a banana leaf bat that is hit towards the opponent's leg, "tort" and gets the suffix "i".

The number of group members in the Torti game must be odd (3, 5, 9, etc.). The game begins by determining the place of the stopping post in the form of a large tree. This place is used as a place for the guard group to cover their eyes with their hands and wait for the other group to hide. The stop post will also serve as a stopping place for groups who walk away after they hide. After the lottery to determine group members and draw which group is guarding then the game begins.

One of the groups closed their eyes while being watched by the referee who had been appointed, while shouting to the group that was walking "Ude ape belon?" (have you been hiding?) If the walking group replies, "Tort ... Ti!", it means they are already hiding and ready to be found. If he can be found, he will be hit with a bat from the banana midrib on the knee of the leg.

To avoid being hit, the participant may run to the inglo (base) so that the guarding group stops their blow. If he cannot be found and can return to the inglo then he is free from blows, gets one point, and is declared victorious. Meanwhile, the participant who gets hit means deducting one point for the group.
