Betawi Traditional Games

The Game of Tok Kadal Dua Batu

Tok Kadal Dua Batu (Kadal = Lizard) is one of the traditional Betawi children's games. In some areas there are those who call it by the name of Kalawadi. This game comes from children in ancient times who were surprised to see a lizard and then hit it until the lizard jumped very far. From this incident, a game was made that imitated a lizard that was hit while jumping up and down.

The game is played by two groups. At the time the game will begin, each group leader draws or does a lottery. The winning group can start first and the loser becomes the guard group. This game uses a tool in the form of a log with a length of approximately 40 cm and a diameter of 2.5-3 cm as a bat (beater). Then there is additional wood measuring approximately 10 cm which is used as a symbol of the lizard.

To play, a hole is made in the field with a hole diameter of approximately 5 cm or it can be replaced by pairing two bricks that are placed in a row with a distance of approximately 5 cm. To play the game Tok Kadal, at first the players must form as many as two groups with one commander or group leader. After the team and leader are formed, both teams can draw to decide which group will start the game first.

For the group that loses from the draw, they can stand guard at the agreed position. Then the group that plays first can hit or toss the “lizard” as high as possible from the hole or on the bricks that have been arranged.

If the lizard is caught by the guard group, the player who toss the lizard is considered dead and the second player continues. If not caught, the lizard will be thrown at the player. If it hit him so he dies, but if it doesn’t, so the game can be continued.
