Betawi Traditional Games

The Game of Serok Kuali

The Serok Kuali game is a traditional Betawi game, especially from Duren Tiga and Mampang areas, South Jakarta. The word serok means to scoop or take something with a tool. The Serok Kuali game requires seeds and banana leaves as playing tools. The seeds used include sapodilla seeds, sangat seeds (small, red and black in color), or gravel. While the spoon is made of banana leaves that have been shaped like a spoon or scoop.

The game begins with a rock – paper – scissor or hompimpa to determine who goes/starts playing first. Then the player kneels down in a circle while placing his seeds in the center of the circle. The player who plays first, grabs the grain and spreads it on the floor. Then with a banana leaf that has been shaped like a spoon, the player takes (scoops) the seeds that have been scattered on the floor one by one and place them near his feet.

When shoving, players must not have more than one seed and or hit another seed so they must be careful. If it hits another seed or is drawn more than one, then the player is considered dead (stops playing) and is replaced by the next player. Seeds that are successfully collected will be his. The player with the most seeds will be considered the winner.

If the seeds are finished, the game continues from the beginning. If there is a player who runs out of seeds, then he cannot participate again or another player lends his seeds. On the condition that the loan seeds will be returned if they win in the next game.
