The Game of Lari Gandeng
The traditional Betawi game Lari Gandeng (coupled run) was popular in the 1950s in the Petamburan area, Central Jakarta. This game is mostly done by teenagers aged 13 to 17 years and is usually a place to find a mate. As the name implies, every male player must hold a female player. Usually the boy will take the partner of a girl he has a crush on.
The game begins with hompimpa to draw a guard pair. The other pair scattered while running. After being given a signal, the guard pair who was previously silent in place will chase the other pair. When chasing, it is forbidden to let go of the partner’s hand. Likewise, with the chased partner. Couples who can be caught will get a turn to be the guard.
