Betawi Traditional Games

Petak Jongkok Game

The Petak Jongkok game is one of the popular traditional games not only among the Betawi people, but also in other areas in Indonesia. This game began to appear since the Dutch colonial era until the 90s. To play this game, each player must have physical strength and strategic thinking. Because during the game, each player will run after other players and squat quickly. While the strategy is used to win the game.

This game is played with a minimum number of 5 players, but the more players the more exciting it will be. Before playing, hompimpa (a kind of rock – paper – scissors) is done first. Then the loser in the hompimpa will be the chaser or called the 'guard'. Players who are not the chaser or 'guard' must run to avoid the guard. In order not to be touched by the guard, players must squat as fast as possible. Players who have squatted may not be touched by the guard. If the player is touched by the Guard before he squats, then he becomes the next Guard. The next rule, if all players squat then there is one who takes the cue to wake all players. The last player to squat and wake up late will replace the guard for the next round.

There are benefits to be gained from this game, especially children in the age range of 6-10 years. One of them is that children become more creative. Because the traditional game of Petak Jongkok does not have written rules, players can make their own rules according to the conditions of the players and their surroundings.

This game can also be used as therapy for children. When playing Petak Jongkok, children can release their emotions. They can scream, laugh, and move. The Petak Jongkok game can also develop children's spatial intelligence. In the Petak Jongkok game, you are introduced to get to know the concept of space or change roles, namely as a chaser or being chased. The last and no less important benefit is to train children's sportsmanship.
