Nyadran Ceremony: Floating the Buffalo's Head into the Sea

Nyadran ritual ceremony in Betawi is different from Nyadran in other places. If so far it is known that Nyadran is a ritual to purify before the month of Ramadan comes, but for the Betawi community, especially those living on the coast, Nyadran is a sea alms ceremony.

This sea alms ritual ceremony is held after the west season ends and fishermen start looking for fish again. This Nyadran ceremony used to be a ceremony or ritual performed by the residents of the Salakanagara Kingdom, especially in Pesalo, whose territory is estimated to be currently located on the coast of Jakarta such as in Kampung Marunda and Kali Blencong, Cilincing, North Jakarta.

Residents in this ceremony slaughter a buffalo and then its head is washed away in the sea as alms. In addition to buffalo heads that are floated or washed into the sea, there are also several other agricultural products and miniature boats. The fishermen and residents also eat the food that has been brought as a form of gratitude for being given fortune.

According to the beliefs of the fishermen and locals, the tradition of throwing buffalo heads into the sea is to feed the fish. Because so far the local people's livelihood is fishing.
