Kodok – Kodokan: A Game to Imitate a Frog

One of the well-known traditional Betawi children's games is kodok – kodokan. In accordance with the origin of the word "kodok" which means frog, certain player in this game should play/ act like a frog. This game is usually played by children aged 8-13 years. This game involves many players and one of the players plays the role of a frog.

This game begins with a player who acts as a handler as if summoning a spirit to be inserted into the body of the “frog” cast. Then, the cast of “frog” imitated the behavior of a frog such as jumping and making sounds like a frog.

The “frog” actor has to chase another player, if there is another player that the “frog” actor catches, then he will become the next “frog” and chase the other players as well. For other players to avoid being chased by the “frog” actor, they can sit on a squat. Squatting can also be done if the player feels tired because the “frog” keeps chasing him, so that the “frog” cannot catch him anymore.

Then there is another rule in this game, if the one sitting squatting wants to get up quickly, he has to hold the “frog's” leg carefully or else he will become the next frog. If all the players were successfully made to sit squatting by the “frog”, the situation would be reversed. The “frog” will be chased by the other players by jumping around like a frog too.

If one of them manages to hold the leg of the "frog" that is being chased, he can stand back up, he can cure his comrades to stand by holding their bodies. The game ends when the handler expels the frog spirit by calling the actor's real name repeatedly in a loud voice.
