Hikayat Raja Syah Mandewa: The Adventure of Two King's Children

Another well-known collection of classical Malay literary texts is Hikayat Raja Syah Mandewa. This saga is an adventure story in prose. The author of this manuscript is not known but it was re-copied by Muhammad Bakir. There are several sources that say this manuscript was written by Muhammad Bakir's uncle, Sapirin bin Usman.

This saga tells of a childless King Syah Mandewa in Jampala Waru. Then he adopted the two sons of his minister, namely Ganta Wara and Ganta Wiri. One time, King Shah Mandewa went hunting for deer, accompanied by Ganta Wara and Ganta Wiri, and also by a governor named Damar Jati.

At that time, in the land of Peringga, a powerful king named Jaya Sakti was ruled. He had a son named Jaka Paringga who was very evil. While hunting, a war broke out between Ganta Wara and Raja Shah Mandewa and Jaka Peringga. Jaka Peringga lost then returned to his country to study supernatural powers from Pastor Ajar Sungkuni and meditated on Mount Wilis.

Meanwhile, Raja Syah Mandewa married Dewi Mangrum Kencana. They have two children. His children are named Damar Jati and Damar Cuaca, who were born in Jampala Waru.

Returning to Jaka Paringga, after finishing meditating on Mount Wilis, Jaka Paringga competed with King Syah Mandewa. Jaka Paringga finally died. Hearing that his son died at the hands of Raja Syah Mandewa, Jaya Sakti then sent Raja Jaya Lawa, his brother in the land of Gelamba, to attack Jampala Waru. Jaya Lawa won and the people of Jampala Waru scattered and fled.

Furthermore, it was said that the son of Raja Syah Mandewa, Damar Jati, looked for his father to the land of Raja Wangsa Kumaya in Kalanggaru. In that country, a competition was being held to find a husband for Nila Sari and Nila Asmara, the daughter of Raja Wangsa Kumaya. Damar Jati disguised himself as Sira Patanian and was involved in a spar with the king's children who participated in the competition. Sira Patanian won the competition and brought the two princesses to her country.

On the way, they were blocked by Damar Cuaca, who was disguised as King Lara. Because they didn’t know each other, they went to war. The story ends with the appearance of Raja Syah Mandewa with his queen, Dewi Mangrum Kemala and Pastor Lalawi Guna with their son, Dewi Mangrum Kencana to stop the war between Damar Jati or Sira Patanian and Damar Cuaca or Prabu Lara. Prabu Lara (Damar Cuaca) met his father, Raja Syah Mandewa and Sira Patanian (Damar Jati) met his grandfather, Pastor Lalawi Guna.

Finally, they realized that they were siblings. After a peaceful atmosphere, they returned to Jampala Waru. Damar Cuaca was then married to Nila Sari and Damar Jati was married to Nila Asmara.
