Betawi Traditional Games

Hide and Seek

This game may already be familiar to the Indonesian people, especially the Betawi people. Hide and seek is a traditional game that has been ingrained and passed down from generation to generation. Even this game is timeless. Until now, many children still play it in the neighborhood and school environment.

Hide and seek is a favorite of children when playing together, especially if there are more than 3 children playing. The game of Hide and Seek begins with hompimpa to determine who is the 'cat'. The player who becomes the 'cat' will later look for his friends who are hiding. Before looking for his friends, 'the cat' counts to ten with his eyes closed or his body facing the wall so he can not see his friends hiding.

After the count of ten finished, the cat begins to look for his friends who were hiding. If the cat finds a friend, he will say the friend's name while touching the base, or the place where he started counting at the beginning.

The name of this base place is different in some region. Some call it Inglo, bon or hong. The game is over after all friends are found. Then the game restarts with a different cat, namely the first player found.
