Grave Pilgrimage
The Betawi community is known as a traditional, religious and Islamic society. One religious tradition that shows this is the tradition of pilgrimage to the grave. For the Betawi people, entering the holy month of Ramadan has a very sacred meaning. Usually a week before Ramadan, the Betawi people generally carry out the tradition of grave pilgrimage, praying for their parents and families who have died.
This tradition is carried out not only before the month of Ramadan, but also at other times such as the month of Zulhijah, Muharam, Rajab, and Shawwal (according to the Hijra calendar). For the Betawi community, pilgrimage is seen as one of the socio-religious activities, where people who make pilgrimages can offer prayers to people who have died.
Before praying, the Betawi people usually clean the tomb that is being pilgrimage. In addition, they also sprinkle flowers on the grave after praying.
