Buleng: The Betawi Story Telling Tradition

The tradition of speech or word of mouth has always been carried out by people of the past. This tradition also exists among the Betawi people, known as Buleng. Buleng comes from the name of a storyteller who was in the Betawi area in ancient times.

The name Buleng is used as a term for storytellers or storytellers because there is a habit in Betawi society when naming something, like a term of expertise or skill, always uses the person who first had the skill. Just like Pak Buleng, whose daily profession is as a storyteller, his type of storytelling skill is called Buleng.

Buleng as an oral tradition of the Betawi people has distinctive characteristics, namely the narrator is alone and there is no accompaniment or companion. Another characteristic is that the stories that are told are from local kingdoms such as the story of the Tanjung Jaya Kingdom, which is said to be in the Jakarta area. In addition, there are also other folk tales from other regions, such as Ciung Wanara, Mundinglaya Dikusumah and Prabu Siliwangi from West Java.

The Buleng oral tradition is usually displayed at events such as circumcision, weddings, nujuh bulanan, birthdays, and haul. In the circumcision ceremony, Buleng's oral tradition usually appears on the night before the circumcision day. This oral tradition does not require a special place to perform, it can be indoors while gathering in a circle on carpets and mats or a bale is made outside where the audience can sit or stand.

The time for oral traditions is generally night, while the duration is very flexible, it can be all night, it can be an hour or two, and so on. It can also be according to the wishes of those who have the event. Likewise, the story that will be delivered can be according to the wishes of the person who has the event or it is up to the storyteller.
