Battle of Agility in the Gasing Game

Gasing is one type of traditional Betawi children's game that uses a tool / toy that rotates on its axis. In general, the toys used in gasing game are made of wood, but some are made of plastic or other materials. Traditional gasing is usually made of tamarind wood, guava wood, sapodilla wood, mahogany wood, pete wood, jackfruit wood and waru wood.

The gasing game is usually played by boys, but there are also no restrictions on being played by girls. Gasing rope is made of nylon material, however for traditional gasing rope it is generally made from tree bark. Arena of play gasing is on hard, solid ground with a diameter of 0.5 to 1 meter in a circular shape.

Gasing is the oldest game in Indonesia because this game has been played since before the Dutch came to the Nusantara. Gasing in each region in Indonesia has a different name. People in West Java and Jakarta, especially the Betawi people, call this game gasing, panggal or tangkalan. In playing gasing, each participant is competed with their agility to be able to rotate the gasing toy as long as possible.

In Betawi, there are 3 known types of gasing games, namely gasing ambilan, gasing angonan and gasing cocokan.

Gasing Ambilan

In playing gasing ambilan, each player must carry more than one gasing toy. One to mount in a circle, and the other to act as the master. The number of participants in the GA game is 5 to 10 people.

After the draw is held, the participant who has the right to take turn first plays his gasing toy by hitting it against the gansingan pile in the circle. Each participant may only hit his gasing toy once in one round. Every gasing toy that comes out of the circle belongs to the person who hit it, this is in accordance with the name, namely ambilan (taking), the participant has the right to take the other participant's gasing toy, if his gasing toy hit can take out the other person's gasing toy.

Gasing Angonan

In game gasing type angonan, gasing toy that spins and stops near the circle line will be deemed to be losers. The other participants may take turns hitting the losing gasing toy to get out of the circle. For the player whose gasing toy loses, he must try to put his other gasing toy in the circle and if he succeeds the game will be repeated. Just like gasing ambilan, in playing gasing angonan, each participant must bring two gasing toys.

Gasing Cocokan

In a cocokan type gasing game, each participant puts one gasing toy in the circle. Each player is trying to get their own gasing with their gasing master. For gasing toy which did not exit the circle or left the last circle, then the gasing toy is considered a loser. As the punishment, the gasing was whipped or stabbed with a nailed gasing toy until it split.
