Cingkrik Silat: Si Pitung's Mainstay Martial Arts Technique

Another well-known type or style of Betawi silat is Cingkrik. Cingkrik silat has existed since the 1920s. A number of sources say, the movements in Silat Cingkrik are inspired by the movements of a monkey. Flexible but has strength.

Betawi culturalist, Yahya Andi Saputra said, based on the story of the birth of the Cingkrik Silat, it cannot be separated from the story of the royal consort of Pajajaran who went into exile in the forest.

While in the forest, the empress noticed the movements of animals, such as snakes, tigers, and monkeys. Including, when the animals attack prey. That is the reference for the Cingrik Silat movement. Etymologically, Cingkrik comes from the word cicingkrikan, jingke or jinjit. The movement is like dancing people because it is done while on tiptoe.

The Cingkrik silat style was first introduced in the Rawa Belong area, West Jakarta, and one of the famous warriors who mastered Cingkrik is Pitung. Cingkrik Silat, has 12 basic moves and three sambut moves. The basic moves include, Keset Bacok, Keset Gedor, Cingkrik, Step Three, Step Four, Open One, Saup, Tiger, Tiktuk, Lion, Lokbe, and Longok.

Until now, there are two styles of Silat Cingkrik that have been studied a lot. The two schools are Cingkrik Goning and Cingkrik Sinan. Cikrik Goning was introduced by Engkong Goning. The man whose real name is Anin Bin Urim was born in 1895 and died in 1975 or at the age of 80 years. Engkong Goning is a warrior from Betawi land, precisely in Kedoya, Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta.

Meanwhile, the silat style of Cingkrik Sinan was developed by Engkong Sinan who founded the Cingkrik college in the Condet, Lebak Bulus, and Rawamangun areas. Steps and movements such as stances and hand movements in Cingrik Goning are wider. Meanwhile, in Cingkrik Sinan it is short or not too wide.
